Insider Favorites: Dorothy’s Guide to Sausalito, California

Living in Sausalito for many years only intensifies the anticipation of rounding the last curve on Bridgeway when, magically, the postcard view of the bay with Angel Island, Alcatraz, and the Bay Bridge comes into focus. An ever-changing panorama includes a variety of water craft: ferry boats, sail boats, James Bond-type yachts, a Darth Vader black yacht with fins, stand-up paddle boarders, kayakers, and rowing teams. In March, during the herring run, fishermen on bobbing red and white boats cast their nets among competing sea lions and diving seagulls. No wonder it’s a world-class destination for tourists, bikers, and anyone who visits San Francisco.
Sausalito is all about views, dining, and wine tasting with plenty of venues along the waterfront. But if it gets too hectic, escape to Caledonia Street and sample Thai, Japanese, Italian, and Indian cuisine. Caledonia is also home to Smitty’s Bar, where you’re likely to meet some of the live-aboard boat people. Or get away from it all at Fort Baker, where you’ll find fine dining at Cavallo Point Lodge or a hamburger at the Presidio Yacht Club; if kids are along, head for the Bay Area Discovery Museum. In Sausalito, there’s something for everyone.
