Hector’s Beef Carpaccio
What it is: Beef Carpaccio
Where to find it: Hector’s, Antigua, Guatemala
What it costs: 60Q (approximately $7.70 US)
Why you want it:
During my recent trip to Antigua, my friend Cesar, who owns the nearby Holistico Hostal, took me to Hector’s on the day I arrived. The cafe is small and casual, tucked away on a street near La Merced Church and lacking any sort of signage out front. Inside: a couple of tables packed mostly with lively locals and an open kitchen facing into one of the dining spaces.
On Cesar’s recommendation I ordered the beef carpaccio. A few minutes later the server returned with my glass of wine, a small bowl of olives, some crusty white bread and my meal: thinly sliced pieces of rich, tender beef swimming in a pool of fragrant olive oil. Each bite delighted, the buttery meat excellently accompanied by the floral tanginess of capers, the sweet zing of shaved red onion and the nutty saltiness of parmesan cheese.
I can only guess that the rest of the menu at Hector’s is equally sublime but, truthfully, I wouldn’t know. I literally ate the beef carpaccio for lunch every day of my stay in Antigua.
