Bushmans Kloof Hotel
By Dax Villanueva
Most people come to Cape Town for what the city and its immediate surrounds have to offer. You can’t hold that against them because Cape Town does have a lot to offer. But what many people don’t know is that there is a gamut of unique and inspiring experiences waiting for the traveler who breaks away from the standard itinerary and spends some time a few hours outside the city.
Some of these experiences are on the rugged side, appealing to those who love to rough it. Bushmans Kloof is at the other extreme, offering a unique experience but in luxury and style. Bushmans Kloof is a resort offering luxury accommodation, fine dining and relaxing spa facilities, but that’s just the start.
The resort is situated in the Cedarberg, a two hour drive from Cape Town. There is no mobile phone reception there which suits those who really want to get away (although, there is wireless internet access so you won’t be completely out of touch). What makes the Cedarberg so appealing to overseas visitors is that it boasts unique flora and fauna. Bushmans Kloof is proud of its commitment to conserving and restoring the land, wildlife and flora.
In addition to its commitment to the environment, Bushmans Kloof is also heavily committed to the historical and cultural heritage of the area. The San, South Africa’s earliest inhabitants, roamed this region during the later stone age and today are recognised as one of the oldest civilisations of mankind.
Within the reserve’s boundaries are over 130 Bushman rock art sites which the visitor can view with one of the knowledgeable guides. For the more active visitor, the resort offers walks, hikes, mountain biking, fishing and more in the reserve. For those who prefer to relax, the resort has a lovely spa which includes an outdoor spa gazebo, the ultimate romantic setting for a dual treatment.
Bushmans Kloof is very excited about their culinary offering. There is a huge fruit and vegetable garden which supplies most of the needs of the kitchen, ensuring super-fresh ingredients. The use of indigenous fynbos herbs adds a distinctly ‘Cape’ flavour to many dishes. The chef is very talented and creative which is probably why Bushmans Kloof won ‘Best Hotel for food in Africa, Middle East & Indian Ocean’ in the Conde Nast Traveller UK Gold List.
Also, having won ‘Best Hotel in the World’ in the 2009 US Travel & Leisure World’s Best Awards reader’s survey (among many other awards), gives one an indication of the quality of the rooms and service. The staff are highly trained, very knowledgeable and very welcoming. The 16 rooms and suites are the definition of luxury, offering spaciousness and comfort far beyond expectation.
Bushmans Kloof resort is really something quite spectacular. Which possibly explains why it is so popular for weddings. A stay here is definitely recommended for the traveler looking for something a little unusual but extremely comfortable.
