Beauty, Style, and Parties – Golden Globes 2012
Awards season is upon us, and as some of you may know, I have a soft spot for the Golden Globes. Maybe it’s because I did my first gifting suite with GBK last year for the Globes. Oftentimes, I’m lucky enough to be the red carpet host with the Jetset Extra team, and it’s always fun meeting the celebs up close. But other times? This Vanity Girl just wants to order some takeout, grab a glass of champagne, and take a front seat. Right on my couch.

But even though I am not stomping all of the Golden Globe parties, I’m going to give you an insider peek at what happens to our town in and around the Globes.
BEAUTY AND STYLE
I weighed in with three beauty experts on what they are hoping to see at the Globes this year, and what trends they are forecasting for Sunday Night. First up, meet Red Carpet Makeup Artist and Fearless Beauty Author Kenetia Lee.
She will be doing makeup for the host of Extra and getting the winners ready for their on-camera interviews backstage.
Maxine: K – what are you looking for in trends?
What is trending right now in my opinion is nice fresh looks, like frosty highlights or a healthy glow to the face. Women are opting not to wear eyeliner on the bottom rim of their eyes and accentuating the tops of their eyes with thicker liner and lashes. I’m seeing base colors for shadows.
On the cheeks and lips, color is much softer. And of course, this is an awards show, so you can’t go wrong with as solid red lip.
The frame of the eyes are the eyebrows. We are seeing fuller, dramatically arched browns to give more lift to eyes.
Next, please meet Jeffrey Paul. He is an in-demand international celebrity makeup artist with Exclusive Artist Management who has done covers with Emily Blount, Freida Pinto, and the Desperate Housewives. He’s also worked with Vogue, Cristina Applegate, Beautylish, and countless models and actresses. In fact, he was booked to be in India but as things always do in the fast-paced fashion and beauty industry, found himself right here in town. So we had a little quick dish via the iPhone at like midnight last night on what’s up for the GG.
Maxine: Who are you excited about seeing this year?
Well, as a personality I always love Meryl Streep. She adds such truth to the whole show. Whenever she wins, she embraces the whole audience with her heart. She also seems to really be enjoying herself … every moment. I’m also excited to see the cast and crew of The Artist. I just thought it was such a beautifully done, stylized piece. Actress Emma Stone does a great job of putting a modern twist and clean, classic style as we saw at the People’s Choice Awards. At that show, I thought Miley Cyrus looked really beautiful too. Finally, my friend Rachel Harris is nominated for the Independent Spirit Award, and I’ll think she’ll be one to watch as well.
Maxine: Will you be getting anyone ready for the Globes or for any of the parties?
I was supposed to be in India, so my agency took me off the roster. There was a change, and my schedule may quickly fill up. At this point, I know I will be working with some of the executives and their wives from The Help and My Week With Marilyn.
Maxine: Are there any trends that you are forecasting?
Not at the Golden Globes. Trends don’t really translate to Red Carpet well. Maybe I’m thinking of it in a purist editorial sense, but when you have a very literal translation of trend, it’s usually done on a model whose features carry that look well. For instance, if I’m going to do a hot-pink eyeliner for an editorial shoot, then it’s all about that. For the Red Carpet, the talent usually wants to highlight their beauty and that isn’t usually a high-trend look. It’s more about Old Hollywood Glamour.
Maxine: Like Vanity Girl Glamour?
Haha, exactly. But as far as fashion, we’ll see talent playing with color a lot more like they did at the People’s Choice Awards. I think we’ll see a lot of color such as hot pink, magenta and green. Over the years, celebrities are wearing more colors to more events and taking bigger risks.
Maxine: Now, what do you think actually fits in those tiny little purses?
A cell phone (barely), mints, tissue folded up, a little powder on the tissue and a small lipgloss.
Jeff’s Top Four Tips to Rock a Red Carpet from the Inside Out:
- Have a complete balanced style from head to toe
- If you are sporting a specific hairdo, make sure it’s comfy and wearable and can last throughout the night
- If you’re doing a special makeup look, make sure it actually works for you, and bring the essentials for your touchups
- Don’t try to be something you’re not. Pretentious and phony gets spotted a mile away.
Next up, we hear from Joe Katz who is the Montage Hotel’s in-house fashion guru. He has reported on fashion trends for ABC’s ontheredcarpet.com, NBC LA, CBS, and written fashion commentary for In Touch and Life & Style magazines on several celebrities, including Drew Barrymore, Kate Hudson, Natalie Portman, Taylor Swift, Blake Lively, Miley Cyrus, Kim Kardashian, The Jonas Brothers, Ali Larter, Jessica Simpson, and more.
The top trends Joe predicts for this Awards Season include:
- Metallic – especially gold tones
- Designs that boast bold graphics
- Black and white designs mixed with color
- Hues of lime green, red, classic black, soft pink, and light blue.
In addition, he adds, “Giorgio Armani is always a staple on the carpet, and right now, he has an amazing blue and black graphic dress that is absolutely stunning. I also love the looks Marchesa showed for spring, which have more of the flapper and fringe look. The beautiful peplum detail will also be a look to note when walking the red carpet.”

Wednesday, Jan 11
The Weinstein Co at The Chateau Marmont: I love this property during the day, because an outdoor lunch will almost always allow you to celebrity spot. I remember one party I went to when I had literally just missed Brangelina (are people even saying that anymore?), so you know this is an oldie but goodie. People are abuzz with their lineup of award nominees (The Artist, My Week with Marilyn, and Iron Lady). Jeffrey is especially excited about The Artist for the beautiful, stylized way it was done. Plus, this hotel is literally across the street from my very first video I did with JetsetExtra, Pinches Tacos, so it holds a special place in my heart.
38th Annual People’s Choice Awards at The Nokia Theater: This one is all about the fans, and didn’t you just love the whole Nina Dobrev story? How she wasn’t even on the ballot and her fans demanded she be added – and then she won. She looked gorgeous in her green frock. And she showed up with boyfriend Ian Somerhalder whom my BFF said was the perfect mix of Rob Lowe and Chace Crawford. That’s a hottie fest and a half, so I wholeheartedly approve. More than 230 million online votes determined who received the awards, and stars walking the carpet before the event included Emma Stone, Neil Patrick Harris, and Jennifer Lawrence. I thought Demi Lovato looked gorg as did Kathy Griffin in a perfectly fitting pink gown. Note that Nina and Kathy were wearing the type of color that Jeffrey was talking about.
Thursday, Jan 12
The Broadcast Film Critics’ Association’s Critics’ Choice Awards at The Palladium: I saw my last Prince concert at the Palladium. According to the Hollywood Reporter, this event has a strong attendance with both execs and talent, and like the People’s Choice Awards, isn’t known for its great after-parties.
Friday, January 13
Paramount Pictures on the lot: Brad Gray will host the studio’s Globes party. The Paramount nominees are Martin Scorsese (Hugo) and Steven Spielberg (The Adventures of Tin Tin). Jetset Extra attended a great food-truck party here during the big Food and Wine Festival (we’re still editing that), so we know that a party on the lot is pretty fantastic.
Vanity Fair at Cecconi’s: What’s not to love about this? About a year ago, I wrote about Cecconi’s, and it is still one of my favorite spots in the city to grab a business breakfast (especially outdoors at a cozy corner couch booth) and the host has Vanity in its name, so I’m all about that. This party will be for Dreamworks’ The Help (just saw that! Loved it.)
W Magazine at Chateau Marmont: We’re back at this hot location on Sunset Blvd. This is the fashion magazine’s pre-Globes party and again, according the HR, ties in with their Best Performances Issue. This is the party for stars with a fashion sense, so we’ll be waiting to see those photos for sure.
American Film Institute’s AFI Awards at The Four Seasons: I love the Four Seasons, a Sunday brunch at this location is just lovely (especially sitting outdoors) as are cocktails on an early evening. Last time I went, my dinner companion puffed on a huge cigar so I wasn’t a big fan of that – but even that was easier to tolerate at the Four Seasons. This luncheon is where AFI presents the certificates for best creative ensembles of 2011 in film and TV. We also love that the Four Seasons is often the home of many a good press junket.
GBK Gifting Lounge at LePetite Hermitage: I had to include one gifting lounge, and this one is it and holds a special place for me. I also love the rooftop pool (I went to an amazing sale from CCSkye there) and one of the execs over at Live Nation introduced me to the private dining cabanas. It’s simply an amazing property.
Green Carpet Challenge: Brunch at The SoHo House for the environmental group that Colin Firth and his wife, Livia, support. I love SoHo House – the views are amazing especially when the sun is setting. I’ll be there for the West Hollywood Board Installation (I was just appointed today!) so I’ll share some pics. And I can’t honestly say that I’ve seen a Green Carpet yet!
Spirit Award Brunch at Boa Steakhouse: I can’t believe I haven’t been here yet since they moved, but this brunch is one that Jeffrey is watching kind of closely because his friend is up for an award as I mentioned earlier. This one celebrates the nominees for the Independent Spirit Awards to be held February 25, and some of the filmmakers will receive grants. As the producer of a horror film, I can say that running out of funds is NOT FUN.
Sunday Jan 15 (after the Globes)
The Weinstein Co, held in the former Trader Vic’s. The Hollywood Reporter said it would be one very hot party.
Warner Bros. InStyle in a tent near the conference area, this will be where Hollywood hunks like Ryan Gosling (OMG in Crazy Stupid Love) and Leonardo DiCaprio (my fave of him is still Titanic) will drop by.
Sony 8th Floor Stardust Room to include Sony Classics, which has 10 nominations. You may recall that the studio won last year with the Social Network, another GREAT film.
HBO – Poolside. Stars expected to attend here include Steve Buscemi, Laura Dern, and Paul Giamatti.
NBC Universal: Held on the garage roof. Bridesmaids is expected to be the big draw. My college friend Wendy McLeondon-Covey (a self proclaimed sarcastanista) played the yummy Orange County-inspired hot mom in my all-time favorite chick flick and she is as funny as ever.
Fox tent adjacent to the former May Co. They will celebrate Fox Broadcasting, and Glee, which I LOVE. I just rented the movie, and I loved that too. I am not as crazy about New Girl, even though I am a fan of Zooey Deschanel; 20th Television (Modern Family, Homeland), FX (American Horror Story and Fox Searchlight (six film noms).
CAA at Sunset Tower. The super agency boasts a major guest list of nominees and the Sunset Tower offers a welcome respite after all the Hilton hopping, and a great view. It’s also a nice afternoon spot to grab a drink and take in a poolside view of the city.
So there you have it, folks. A little beauty, some hot parties, and this Vanity Girl on her couch with a glass of bubbly this year.
Well not exactly, now that I think about it. I was at Philippe Chow’s Wednesday for actress/host Kim Cole’s birthday soiree, dinner plans tonight at A-Frame, GBK lounge at Petit Hermitage today or tomorrow, L’Oreal 100th Soiree Saturday night at the Four Seasons, Beverly Hills and my friend Red Carpet MUA Kenetia Lee’s bye-bye bash. She is getting ready to leave for NYC and work with the Trump Organization once again.
So come Sunday, yes. I will be ready to curl up with a glass of champagne and fuzzy slippers and check out all the fashion, beauty, and award winners from my front-row couch seat in West Hollywood, California. Meanwhile, Mary Anne and Jason (the owners of Jetset Extra) just left London for their safari in Kenya. Yeah – Jetset is what you make it.
