The Grasshopper Restaurant
I have been to the Thai restaurant, Grasshopper, a number of times now, and there is good reason for this. Located within, yet separate from the five star Stamford Hotel in Auckland’s CBD, it caters to a business cliental for lunch. However, in the evening transforms into a venue for either a sophisticated or casual diner, which provides a relaxing atmosphere.
The modern (fusion) take on Thai cuisine, coupled with the friendly and attentive service, experienced chefs, and classy ambience made this restaurant a great dining experience. The Grasshopper has open plan dining option but also offers private booths and rooms. There is also a bar area for which I recommend exotic Thai cocktails such as the Pineapple Julep.
For an entree my companion I and had the Black tiger prawns deveined, wrapped in rice paper and lightly fried. For the main course we had Twice cooked duck leg Thai style with ginger sauce and seasonal vegetables ($23.50) and M Pla Manao – Whole snapper steamed topped with lemon juice, garlic and chilli ($24.50) –the produce used was fresh in all these dishes, the meals were delivered promptly, and the portions were just the right size. The wine list is extensive but not exhaustive, but does offer a good selection of New Zealand wines. I opted for a bottle of Fallen Angel Marlborough -Sauvignon Blanc ($50).
I found the price reasonable considering the restaurants is in a five star hotel and the fact the food and service were of the highest quality.
I would recommend the Grasshopper to anyone who wishes to try a fusion take on Thai cuisine, expects great service and food, and as a venue for both intimate dining and entertaining large groups.
