Sharon Spence Lieb Takes First Place
Congratulations to Sharon Spence Lieb, who won the first-place prize for Best Online Consumer-Oriented Travel Article for her Jetset Extra article “Looking for Captain Cook: Penguins, Icebergs, and a World Famous Explorer.”
The prize was awarded by the Atlantic-Caribbean Chapter of the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW). Sharon also won two other first place awards in two categories – Best Newspaper Article Foreign Travel and Best Magazine Article Foreign Travel – for stories which appeared in The Moultrie News Newspaper of Mount Pleasant, SC and Journeys West Magazine of Vancouver, British Columbia. In addition, she won a third place award for Best Self-Illustrated article titled “The Pursuit of Happiness in Cancun,” which also appeared in The Moultrie News.

Sharon Spence Lieb of Mount Pleasant, S.C. received a First Place Award for Best Online Consumer-Oriented Travel Article titled “Looking For Captain Cook Penguins, Icebergs and a World Famous Explorer” in JetSetExtra.com from the Atlantic-Caribbean Chapter of the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW). Winners in the chapter’s 2011 Writing and Photo Contest which drew 155 entries were announced during the organization’s annual meeting, held June 26-29 in Pittsburgh, Pa. The primary goal of the chapter’s annual contest is to recognize outstanding travel writing and photography that is pertinent, meaningful and motivates the reader to head to the destination featured.
Established in 1956, the Society of American Travel Writers is the pre-eminent professional organization of travel communicators, whose purpose is to promote responsible journalism, provide professional support and development for its members and encourage the conservation and preservation of travel resources. Members of SATW include writers, photographers, editors, electronic media and journalists, film lecturers, broadcast/video/film producers and public relations representatives, all specializing in travel.
