Jetsetting With Emmy-Winning Television Host Trish Suhr
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to travel with Trish Suhr, the “Yard Sale Diva” of the Style Network’s Clean House series? We did, so we asked her about some of her favorite destinations around the world, what’s in her travel bag, and what she’s planning to do next.
Q: What type of traveler are you? (ie: adventurer, cultural explorer, free spirit, rejuvenator, spa aficionado, etc.)
A: I’m all of the above! I love traveling to a place and feeling like I live there. I want to know and experience their food, culture, and music, and I love to work out while I travel, so getting to do what the locals do for exercise is awesome!
Q: What types of activities do you like to do on your travels?
A: I love to be active, so I may take one day to lounge by a pool, but that’s it. I love paddle-boarding, running, hiking, seeing what’s out there, and exploring where I am.
Q: Do you look for a place where it’s quiet and you can relax, or someplace that has great activities or nightlife?
A: I’d say we do a bit of both. I don’t want to be in the thick of it, but I certainly don’t want to be bored.
Q: When thinking about where you will travel next, what inspires you to make a decision? And what, if any, research do you do on that destination?
A: I think it’s the southerner in me, but I like to travel like a Kenny Chesney song – “Suntanned toes tickin’ the sand, cold drink chillin’ in my right hand.” If there’s a beach, sunshine, and smiling faces, I’m there. I love warm weather, the warmer the better. I do research, usually to find out where the tourists go, and then I stay away from there.
Q: What is the most memorable trip you’ve taken and why?
A: I know this is not what you’re expecting, but my most memorable trip was to Afghanistan to perform for our troops. I’ve been all over the country and it’s really a beautiful place with wonderful people. It reminds me of Palm Springs quite a bit – very majestic looking. I loved entertaining for the men and women who keep us safe and experiencing how they make the most of a very rough situation. I’m so grateful for those trips – they’ve changed my life.
Q: What is the “best” food find you’ve ever found on a trip?
A: Off the top of my head it would be the tikin xic (pronounced teekin –sheek) whole fish from Chuuk Kay Restaurant on Isla Mujeres Island in Mexico, but I’m a CRAZY foodie, so I have some amazing foodie finds.
Q: What, if anything, do you always take with you when you travel?
A: I’m quite nerdy when I travel, so if you need it, I’ve usually got it, but I can’t leave home without my pashmina wrap (it’s the world’s best travel blanket, yet, it’s still stylish) my iPad, travel socks (I get cold feet on a plane) and travel-size Clorox wipes (I wipe down everything when I get to my seat…I mean, have you EVER seen anyone wiping down the tray or the armrest?).
Q: What’s your best piece of travel advice?
A: Keep a journal of your travels, (you will forget them some day). Tip well for great service – it seems simple, but a lot of people don’t and it gets you so taken care of when you’re traveling. Hydrate – it seems so silly, but it’s the one thing we all forget to do when we travel. And stay away from sodium.
Q: Is there a destination where you can’t imagine not returning?
A: Fiji. It’s truly one of the most unbelievable places on this planet. The people, the culture, and the water are world-class.
Q: Where are your favorite weekend getaways?
A: We’re really blessed here in Southern California because we have so many amazing weekend getaways that are all totally different. We love the central coast of California. The Dolphin Bay Resort in Pismo Beach is amazing. It’s like another world. Solvang is a quick, fun, and unique trip that is always a good time. Mammoth Lakes when you need to ski and get up in the mountains, and San Diego is always fun – we can paddleboard, stay at the Hotel Del Coronado, and go for great runs!
Q: Where would you like to travel next?
A: My next dream destination is the British Virgin Islands. I want to discover new beaches and new people and put my toes in the sand.
Q: Tell us about your upcoming projects?
A: I’m currently working on The Ricki Lake Show as her resident lifestyle expert, I’m the spokesperson for Breathe Right and Pledge, and I’m also working on a couple of new design and makeover series with Mark Brunetz, my partner in crime. There are a lot of exciting things and a lot of travel ahead!
