Jetset Extra Congratulates Karla Erovick on 100 Contributions
Jetset Extra would like to thank insider Karla Erovick, who has contributed 100 blog posts and feature articles to the site. Karla is one of our most prolific contributors, and has written about everything from California’s Wine Country to Caribbean islands.
Karla has always loved to see new places and grew up longing for the glamour of airline travel during the Pan Am days. One of her favorite collections is vintage flight bags, including bags from TWA, Pan Am, Braniff, Hacienda, Mexicana, and British Airways. She didn’t set out to be a travel writer, but loved to visit exotic locations, and after a friend approached her about writing about her journeys, the rest was history. Karla has written more than 400 travel pieces since then.
One of Karla’s favorite destinations is Hanalei Bay in Kauai because of its natural beauty and cool island vibe. She was lucky enough to go on a yoga retreat in Kauai last year and had a wonderful time practicing yoga and learning about the island and its people and traditions. A few days in paradise made her feel as if her reset button had been pushed. One of the things she enjoys most about travel is how transformative it is.
Another great experience was the year that Karla lived and worked in Dubai on one of the giant real estate development projects. Karla feels as if the Middle East gets a bad rap in the media and said she found it to be a welcoming place. While in the Middle East, Karla had some wonderful opportunities to learn more about Arab culture and experience their hospitality. One of her favorite experiences was a desert adventure that included crazy four-wheeling in the desert that was better than a roller coaster, a camel ride, and a barbecue under the stars. She and her hosts smoked flavored tobacco from shisha pipes sitting on rugs spread over the sand and were entertained by musicians and belly dancers.
While she was in Dubai, Karla also traveled to Muscat, Oman, where she stayed in a luxurious hotel overlooking the sea. She visited the souk for trinkets and bought some rare perfume and frankincense, which grows there. Karla saw some of the historic sites, drank mint tea, and went to a beautiful mosque that Westerners are allowed to visit. Karla said she really enjoyed the architecture, food and music in the region.
Karla visited Spain recently and thoroughly loved her visit to the Andalucia region in the south. She loved visiting Granada and the magical fortress, the Alhambra. Karla stayed near the Alhambra and watched the sunsets in the evening. One night after dinner, she got off the bus too early and found herself alone in the Alhambra grounds walking up the hill after dark by herself. It was so still and peaceful as the light from the moon illuminated her path – a magical moment.
Of course she loves Madrid with its energy and ease of getting around. She enjoyed the museums, walking around the historic parts of town, and photographing the architecture. Karla said she loved that you order a drink in a bar and they bring you a complimentary tapa.
For quick trips, Karla loves going to the Napa or Sonoma valleys to explore amazing wineries and attend wine events. She said she has visited most of the sparkling wine producers in the valley – a particular favorite of hers – and finds something new during every visit. One of Karla’s favorite wine-country towns is Calistoga with its mineral waters. She finds a mud bath and massage to be very therapeutic and relaxing after a day of wine tasting. The hot air balloon ride over the valley is a spectacular experience and a great perspective on the wine country.
Karla also loves driving down the San Mateo coast from San Francisco to enjoy the beautiful beach views. The coastal towns of Half Moon Bay and Princeton by the Sea are great places to enjoy fresh seafood. One of Karla’s favorite things to do is to play tourist in San Francisco, where she lives. She can be seen riding the cable cars, going to the wharf to eat crab sandwiches, and having drinks at the Top of the Mark.
Although Karla has traveled to many destinations, there are so many more that she longs to visit, including Istanbul, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Argentina, Chile, and Columbia. She often makes her travel plans based on the time of year, because she prefers warm-weather destinations. Karla also likes visiting places that are conducive to relaxation but that have culture or nightlife. Spending hours on the beach isn’t for her, so she wants lots of activities from which to choose.
One of Karla’s first big international trips was to Bali, which she described as a magical place. She spent a few days on a very small island, Gili Trawangan, which was only accessible by boat. Karla said she had so much fun eating freshly caught seafood at a table with her feet in the warm ocean. The hotel was like a very comfortable treehouse with TV and air conditioning upstairs, an enclosed outdoor bathroom, and a covered lanai downstairs, all just steps from the ocean. Above all, Karla loves to vacation in places where you can live in a bathing suit.
Jetset Extra is looking forward to reading even more about Karla’s travels. Congratulations on 100 contributions to Jetset Extra, Karla!
