In the Morning You Go Gunnin’
Bike Riding and Yoga Oh Yeah
“On your left!” I yelled as I came up to a slow skater on the bike path in Santa Monica. I like to sing Steely Dan while I ride my bike on a Saturday morning. Steely Dan lyrics seem appropriate to go with bike riding in Santa Monica—wind in your hair and sun on your face. My vacationer’s tip is to ride bikes and skate on the bike path prior to 10am or after 5pm on the weekends to avoid a possible crazy moment of collision.
Doing fun things in between those times in Los Angeles is my expertise. One of the best suggestions is to experience a private yoga class in your hotel room with my new favorite yoga instructor. Let me tell you about Sari Yoga.
I live in Venice, so Sari came to my home for a private yoga instruction on a Saturday morning after my bike ride. Note for vacationers: she is happy to come to your hotel room or the beach for private instruction and she digs Steely Dan too. She walked in, said ” Hello” in a sweet voice, set up her mat and quite quickly brought my entire room, and myself, into a state a calm.
We began the yoga practice together. As we went through the poses, she gave me peaceful instruction on how to protect my back. For years, it has been my challenge to master the upward dog without hurting my back. It became such a challenge that I decided to only do lower camel instead in my practice. I chatted with Sari about this and she thoughtfully slowed my practice down and demonstrated the upward dog step by step, including modifications for elimination of back pain. In addition, she showed me three new stretches that will open my hamstrings and loosen my back muscles. With the help of Sari’s guided breath, I was able to meditate during the non-instructional parts of the session, which was the bulk of the time.
Near the end of the session, Sari led me through Shavasana in a peaceful tone with my legs up against the wall to support a stretch on my hamstrings. Drifting off was easy and peaceful. After a few minutes, she brought me back and ended my session with positive intentions for the remainder of the day. I not only received new instruction for my yoga practice, I feel I gained a new friend.
With over 12 years of experience, Sari gives private yoga instruction to travelers in groups of six and under or solo classes for one on one instruction here in Los Angeles.
