Il Mascalzone in Putney
When I moved from New York to London—aside from the weather—I feared London would lack good pizza. I imagined my future life ordering from Domino’s and convincing myself it would be OK. There is an ubiquitous pizza chain in London—called Pizza Express—which has its charms (and many a Brit has claimed to like Pizza Express more than the famous New York pizza), but a comparable locale to what New Yorkers come to expect from a pie is Il Mascalzone in Putney.
This place has that authentic Italian pizzeria feel: From the ice cream/gelato stand, to the premiere league football played on a big screen, to the waiter’s love of children, and the pizza being made out front. Our daughter absolutely loves this place, as she’s always whisked away my some waiter or waitress to the ice cream stand or given endless handfuls of candy. Warm, friendly, buzzy, and simply good pizza—discovering it has brought a tear to this New Yorker’s eye.
