Get a Taste of Florence at Acqua Al 2 in San Diego
Aqua Al 2 in Florence, Italy is a favorite among high-profile Florentines and visitors alike. Eleven years ago, chef/owner Martin Gonzalez brought the menu and traditions of Aqua Al 2 to San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter. Aqua Al 2 in the Gaslamp Quarter captures the spirit of the exquisite artistry of Florence – from the architecture to the Uffizi – and of course, the delicious cuisine that exemplifies the passion of Italy.
A decade later, Aqua Al 2 is one of the most sought-after culinary spots in the bustling Gaslamp district. The traditional menu features insalata (salads), primi (first courses and pasta and rice dishes), and secondi (entrees).
One of my favorite dishes was the “Fileno al Mirtillo,” a hand-carved filet mignon topped with an intensely flavorful blueberry sauce. I don’t normally like sweet with my savory, but the flavors were perfectly balanced and worked beautifully together.
Make sure to ask about their sampler pasta plate, where picky eaters are sure to find something that will please their palates.
Chef Gonzalez and his team also strive to put together events where guests can enjoy special experiences along with their meal. One of their signature events is a monthly wine-tasting led by Aqua Al 2’s knowledgeable sommelier that gives guests an opportunity to learn about Italian wines.
Thursday-night Happy Hour is a favorite for local couples looking for a relaxing-yet-elegant date night. Give the restaurant a call and get on their list to stay informed about their event calendar.
When you visit Aqua Al 2, take a look at the signed plates – including a Jetset Extra plate – lining the dark wood walls. This tradition comes from the original restaurant in Florence. If you can’t make it to Italy, Aqua al 2 is a great place to enjoy a taste of Florence in the historic Gaslamp Quarter of downtown San Diego.
