Finding a Piece of European Charm in San Luis Obispo

I made a great discovery in downtown San Luis Obispo just minutes from shopping and beaches. I had just wrapped up a four-day photography shoot and press tour in the area and looked forward to some rest and recuperation at Petit Soleil Bed & Breakfast.
As I entered the B&B, I was immediately transported to the French Quarter in New Orleans—my hometown—when I noticed the cobblestone courtyard with café-style umbrellas and vibrant colors reminiscent of a French countryside. I was stunned to learn this beautiful bed and breakfast was once a motor inn.
Owners John and Dianne Conner welcomed my little pooch Lilly and I with open arms. Lilly was immediately given a doggie treat baked fresh in the kitchen, and she was allowed in the dog-friendly rooms and sun-soaked courtyard for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Petit Soleil charges a $25 pet fee, to insure all rooms are cleaned and allergy-free. Guests are asked not to let pets on the furniture or leave them in the room unattended.
I quickly checked into my room. The guestrooms, which all have different names, come with all the amenities as well as a window-side reading nook and little accents of beach artifacts. Each of the fifteen rooms has been uniquely appointed with colors reminiscent of Provence with touches of whimsy. The rooms are non-smoking and each has a private bathroom.
I attended the local and French wine tasting paired with appetizers, held at the café from 5 to 6:30 p.m., and met guests who shared their stories about visiting Petit Soleil several times throughout the year. They had great suggestions about what activities to add to my to-do list in downtown San Luis Obispo and at the beaches, which are only a couple of blocks away.
The next morning, the smell of fresh coffee and caramel-apple French toast woke me, and off to the café I went. I decided to splurge and indulged in a succulent quiche and pancakes.
My experience at Petit Soleil was exactly what I needed to recharge and prepare myself to hit Los Angeles with a refreshed mind set. I encourage you to treat yourself to this little gem of European flavor and comfort.
