Concerts at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens
The Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden in Cape Town is acclaimed as one of the great botanical gardens of the world and of those few can match the setting of Kirstenbosch because it is nestled at the foot of Table Mountain. The mountain creates an amazing backdrop and also influences the climate in the garden. Keen walkers and hikers can climb Table Mountain using two routes which start in the garden, Nursery Ravine and Skeleton Gorge (not as scary as it sounds but always go in a group as there have been muggings). Kirstenbosch normally submits an entry to the Chelsea Flower Show in London and has won several medals.
Kirstenbosch is a fantastic place, not only for its natural beauty but also because it’s a great place to enjoy a picnic and relax. It’s popular with the locals and tourists alike. However, the inside info on Kirstenbosch is that it’s our best concert venue. We’ve had many international acts perform there, but more importantly, local bands perform there every Sunday evening during summer.
Concert season runs from November through to April, including something special for New Year’s eve. Tickets are very reasonably priced, ranging from R65 to R95 ($10 to $15) depending on the popularity of the band performing that day. The concerts start at 5:30pm, but it’s recommended you get there an hour or two before to get a good spot and enjoy a picnic. You can take all your own food and drinks including alcohol, but you must take all your rubbish out with you when you leave. The concerts end by 7pm and it is still light around that time.
If you’re in Cape Town over a Sunday during summer, do yourself a favour and get to one of these concerts. Concerts are often sold out days before the event, you can find details of how to book tickets and what bands are performing here.
