A Temple That Stands Above the Rest in Gangnam, Seoul
While in Korea, it can sometimes be difficult to decide which temples to visit. There are so many to choose from and each is beautiful and special in its own right. One that stands above the rest (literally) is Bong Eun Sa.
Located in Gangnam, Seoul, this temple contains Mireukdaebul, the Buddha of the Future statue. This statue stands 23 meters high (75 feet), and is the largest statue of Buddha in Korea. Within Bong Eun Sa, there are many temples to see. And luckily for foreigners, there is a temple guide printed in English providing a history of each temple (these pamphlets are not always an available item and whenever I stumble across one I am now greatly appreciative of its existence). Bong Eun Sa also offers a foreigner temple stay, a time where foreigners can stay in a temple and experience Buddhist tradition and culture. Visits are 2 hours long and cost 10,000 won (approximately $10). Foreigner stays are offered every Thursday from 2:00-4:00 pm and require a reservation.
Happy Travels!
Bong Eun Sa is located directly across the street from the COEX mall and is subway accessible.
